GridON is a leading provider of fault current mitigation solutions for increased capacity in electricity networks and cost-effective connection of distributed generation and low carbon energy sources. Load growth, connection of distributed generation and increasing interconnection of meshed networks all lead to higher short circuit surge currents, often exceeding switchgear ratings. Cascading fault currents result in supply disruptions, equipment damage and severe power outages.

Network operators are forced to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in upgrading sub-station equipment like switchgear, overhead lines, bus-sections and transformers - in order to prevent catastrophic consequences. In some cases, connections are made possible through conventional resource-intensive and disruptive network reinforcement. Conventional solutions negatively impact power quality, stability and reliability of supply, resulting in substantial cost and delays. This leaves available generation capacity underutilized, thus inhibiting energy source diversification and improvements in network capacity.

The electricity market is going through a global revolution in an effort to connect thousands of Distributed Generation (DG) sources, which inherently increase fault current levels - beyond network protection limits. While regulators urge for timely connection of DG, network operators often can’t approve additional supply without reliable means for limiting additional fault currents.

GridON is offering network operators, Independent Power Producers (IPP), and industrial customers cost-effective solutions which enable connection of multiple new generation sources as well as paralleling of network sections. GridON’s fault current mitigation solution improves the network stability and security of supply. It also improves the power quality due to reduced overall network impedance. Network planners and electrical engineering consultants are now able to quickly design in the product with minimal changes in existing network. GridON's products can save between tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in industrial and utility networks, respectively.

GridON’s cost-effective solutions significantly reduce capital expenditure and time consuming labor required for conventional network upgrades and early retirement of fit-for-use equipment. It directly defers or completely avoids the need for network reinforcements that are usually required when connecting network segments or new generation sources. GridON's products can save between tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in industrial and utility networks, respectively.

GridON supports the reduction of carbon footprint by allowing fast approval to connect low carbon energy sources to the distribution network. The connection of generation sources such as landfill-gas and bio-gas based generators, wind and solar farms, and co-generation can be significantly expedited by eliminating the short circuit current issues that often delay or completely inhibit such connections.

GridON offers two product lines covering all market segments: (a) a pre-saturated core Fault Current Limiter (FCL) for medium-to-high voltage distribution and transmission networks; and (b) a power-electronics Fault Current Limiting Interrupter (FCLi) for low-to-medium voltage connection of DG and industrial/commercial generators. GridON's FCL/FCLi blocks fault currents from propagating through the network, thus preventing power failures, disruptions and network outages.

GridON's power-electronics Fault Current Limiting Interrupter (FCLi) limits and immediately interrupts excessive fault current in low-to-medium voltage networks. Designed with relatively small footprint and affordable price tag, the FCLi is a perfect solution for network operators, independent power producers and industrial/commercial customers. The FCLi enables fast and cost-effective connection of distributed generators, and sale of excess generation capacity from industrial and commercial generators. The return on investment in an FCLi is expected within less than one year.



Being scalable to very high voltage and power ratings, GridON’s legacy Fault Current Limiter (FCL) is well suited for distribution and transmission networks. The saturated-core based FCL has been installed in live networks as of 2013. GridON has partnered with Australian based Wilson Transformer Company, a shareholder and manufacturing partner, to offer a state-of-the-art portfolio of FCL products for all range of medium-to-very high voltage and power ratings.

GridON has been an active member of the IEEE/PES workgroup PC37.302 which issued an official guideline for fault current limiting technologies.
